"the area's mild climate, coupled with its topography, creates lots of microclimates that support its biodiversity,"
"Foraging is a recurring issue for us, especially after the first significant rain of the season in December and January when mushrooms are at their peak,"
"We put out plenty of signs notifying visitors that foraging in the park is illegal and if caught, folks will be cited."
Monterey County contains one-third of California's plant biodiversity and supports many edible and medicinal plants, seasonal fruits, nuts, berries and seafood. Mild coastal climate and varied topography create numerous microclimates that sustain rich biodiversity. Indigenous Rumsen Ohlone and Esselen peoples foraged acorns, strawberries, mushrooms and ramps for thousands of years and encourage respectful harvesting and taking only what is needed. Many parks prohibit foraging, post signs and may cite violators. The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District offers free fall and winter workshops to teach mushroom identification, safe foraging practices and supervised foraging opportunities.
