Is India's E20 fuel rollout damaging engines? DW 09/01/2025
"Ajay Raj, a government official in New Delhi, noticed a drop in his car's mileage and an increase in its maintenance costs just months after the government introduced 20% ethanol-blended fuel across India. "The mechanic told me E20 blended petrol is making my engine lethargic and the rubber seals are not built for it," Raj told DW. "In the coming months, I may have to replace parts and recalibrate the engine.""
"India rolled out the E20 fuel with the aim of reducing oil imports as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on clean energy. Ethanol is a biofuel derived from agricultural produce or organic waste. The move has saved over $16 billion (around 14 billion) in foreign exchange over the past decade, according to official government data and reports equating to a reduction in crude oil imports by about 24.5 million metric tons."
India implemented 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) nationwide to reduce oil imports and advance clean energy goals. Many motorists reported decreased fuel economy, loss of power, and higher maintenance expenses within months of the rollout. Mechanics warned of engine lethargy, rubber seal degradation, injector clogging, and potential fuel pump damage for some vehicles. Official data credits ethanol blending with over $16 billion in foreign exchange savings and a roughly 24.5 million metric ton reduction in crude oil imports over the past decade. A public interest litigation asked the Supreme Court to require ethanol-free gasoline availability at stations and to mandate consumer information.
