Man arrested in connection with fly-tipping mountain in Oxfordshire
"The illegal fly tipping site near the River Cherwell has sparked major outage among residents and MPs and was later declared a critical incident by the Environment Agency (EA). The EA's chief executive said the declaration means it is laser-focused on finding those responsible and ensuring they face the full force of the law. The Prime Minister previously said he is appalled by the disgusting mountain of waste and that he wants to see it cleaned up as quickly as possible."
"The EA has deployed additional officers to manage the area and progress its investigation, named Operation Nation, which is following several lines of inquiry. Its teams have agreed a plan to erect additional barriers to minimise waste moving into the river if there is rainfall or flooding. Environment Agency has already secured a restriction order to prevent further dumping and is actively monitoring the River Cherwell for pollution"
Large-scale illegal tipping in a field alongside the A34 in Kidlington, Oxfordshire created a 150-metre mound of shredded household and commercial waste including paper, card and plastic. The site sits near the River Cherwell and raised immediate concerns about pollution and waste moving into the river. The Environment Agency declared a critical incident, launched Operation Nation and deployed additional officers while securing a restriction order to prevent further dumping. Teams plan to erect barriers to minimise runoff and are actively monitoring the river. A 39-year-old man has been arrested as part of the criminal investigation, and ministers demanded a rapid clean-up.
