Met Eireann Status Yellow ice and snow warning for five counties in place
"It will be icy this evening as an arctic airmass arrives Met Éireann said showers of hail, sleet and snow are to be expected for the duration of the warnings, affecting areas of high ground in particular. The warning came into place at midnight until noon on Thursday and will apply to counties Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim and Sligo. Hazardous travelling conditions and icy stretches are possible, Met Éireann has said."
"Temperatures dipped to -1 degrees overnight, and are set to drop even lower later in the week as an Arctic airmass arrives from north of the country. Unsettled weather conditions will continue to see cold and wet conditions as the week progresses. Today will also be cold with sunshine and scattered showers, some of them wintry with hail and sleet. There will be potentially snow showers too, mainly over higher ground."
"Highest temperatures will range from 3 to 7 degrees, and feeling even colder with an added wind chill factor. This evening will bring clear spells and further scattered showers, mainly in the north and west. Some of the showers will be wintry, especially in Ulster, though the showers will become increasingly isolated overnight. There will be lowest temperatures of just -3 to +2 degrees, coldest in the east and south, with a fairly widespread frost and some icy patches developing."
A midnight-to-noon warning covers Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim and Sligo, forecasting hail, sleet and snow especially on high ground and hazardous icy stretches. The UK Met Office issued similar warnings for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry, warning of lying snow and potential travel delays. Temperatures fell to -1 degrees overnight and are expected to drop further as an Arctic airmass moves in from the north, with highest daytime temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees and significant wind chill. Showery conditions will continue, with wintry showers mainly over higher ground, widespread frost, and icy patches developing overnight.
