"Community-First AI Infrastructure."
"We are at a moment in time when we need to listen and we need to address these concerns head on,"
Microsoft pledged a five-point 'Community-First AI Infrastructure' plan intended to reduce local harms from expanding data centers. The plan includes paying more to avoid raising electricity bills for nearby customers, minimizing corporate water use, training workers, creating jobs, and contributing to local tax bases. Local opposition to data center projects has influenced elections and led to cancellations or delays. Rising electricity rates nationwide have been driven in part by data center power demand, manufacturing, and electrification of buildings and transport. Household electricity bills rose 13 percent nationally in 2025, and data center power demand could consume up to 12 percent of US electricity by 2028.
