Southern Water has implemented a hosepipe ban in the Isle of Wight and significant areas of Hampshire, effective from 9am on Monday. This decision follows similar restrictions announced by Thames Water, Yorkshire, and South East Water, due to critically low water reserves, which are down 24% compared to typical levels. The managing director, Tim McMahon, emphasized the necessity of this ban to safeguard local chalk streams and the wildlife dependent on them, which are rare ecosystems akin to the Amazon rainforest.
"We have to respond to the widespread and prolonged dry weather affecting our region. In our case, this means a hosepipe ban for our customers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, to protect the health of our amazing chalk streams, which as one of the rarest habitats on Earth has been compared to the Amazon rainforest."
"Southern Water has revealed that water reserves are at critically low levels, down 24% for this time of year."
