Super-sniffer aeroplane finds oil fields' hidden emissions
"Airborne sensor shows that methane emissions from oil- and gas-producing areas can be five times higher than reported."
"Oil- and gas-producing regions in the continental United States are giving off up to five times more methane than the companies extracting them are reporting to government regulators."
Airborne sensors measured methane concentrations over oil- and gas-producing regions in the continental United States and detected emissions up to five times greater than the amounts companies reported to government regulators. The measurements indicate substantial underestimation of methane releases in inventory reporting. Elevated methane fluxes increase near-term climate forcing and signal missed opportunities for emissions mitigation. The airborne approach mapped spatially resolved plumes and identified emission hotspots tied to production infrastructure and operations. Improved detection and independent verification can inform regulatory oversight, prioritize leak repairs, and refine national greenhouse-gas inventories.
