This round of king tides on Northern California coastline will be the king of them all
"The third round of king tides since November arrived Friday, coinciding with a set of storms that started to drop rain Wednesday and won't stop doing so until Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The region also saw king tides in early November, and another round of them in early December. That said, these king tides are expected to be in a class of their own."
"The weather service said they anticipate the tides could affect up to 2 feet of land that normally does not receive tide water. Meteorologist Roger Gass said Friday it means that areas of land that are normally dry could be 2 feet under water. The king tides are caused by celestial events including the position of the moon and sun."
A third round of king tides coincides with a multi-day storm, bringing continuous rain through Monday afternoon. Water from the San Francisco Bay surged onto Interstate 80 near the metering lights and toll plaza. The king tides could inundate up to two feet of land that is normally dry, potentially covering lower-tier parking lots and some upper-tier areas. The tides result from alignment of the Earth, moon and sun, with a full supermoon providing extra gravitational boost. A coastal flood warning is in effect along the San Francisco Bay shoreline through 2 p.m. Saturday, affecting San Francisco, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay and nearby communities.
