Initially skeptical about the effectiveness of protests, the author attends the 'Hands Off' protests in D.C. and witnesses a surprising turnout. Despite concerns about low attendance and disillusionment from previous protests, the streets filled with tens of thousands of demonstrators, creating an atmosphere of solidarity and hope. As the author mingles with the crowd, they reflect on the significance of hope in the face of ongoing challenges, recognizing that gathering in solidarity can be a powerful act.
Attendance would be low, I feared, for the 'Hands Off' protests of April 5, and no matter what the numbers were, they wouldn't make a difference.
Eventually the throngs became so thick that I chained my bike to a lamppost and walked down 15th Street, against the tide of hundreds of protestors.
But all around me were still uncountable numbers of Americans, chanting, clapping, buzzing with dissent, high on hope.
What good does hope do? As the Earth cooks, as speculation continues to grow, perhaps the most significant action is to gather in solidarity.
