Warning issued to millions after claims hurricane season is over
"'Look how quiet it is out there! Might as well eat all of your hurricane supplies because this hurricane season is over!'"
"'With a lack of clickbait content on the computer models, misinformation has shifted to claims about the rest of the Atlantic hurricane season.'"
"'It only takes one storm to make a season memorable,' the weather experts added on Tuesday."
National Weather Service meteorologists warned that a viral social media post claiming the hurricane season was over could cause people to let their guard down. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through the end of November, with NOAA predicting the peak for 2025 during September and October. So far there have been six named storms, including Category 5 Hurricane Erin. NOAA projects up to 19 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes. NWS Miami noted over 60 percent of southern Florida landfalling hurricanes arrived near September 10 and emphasized that a single storm can define a season.
