Eurostar announced plans to launch new train services between London, Frankfurt, and Geneva starting in the early 2030s. With a fleet of up to 50 new trains at an estimated cost of two billion euros, these services aim to provide sustainable travel options. Journey times will be approximately five hours to Frankfurt and five hours and 20 minutes to Geneva. However, there are logistical hurdles to overcome before launch, and demand is expected to be strong from both leisure and business travellers, especially with the recent memorandum signed between the UK and Switzerland to facilitate direct routes.
Eurostar chief executive Gwendoline Cazenave stated, "Many passengers prefer longer train journeys over flying due to a desire for sustainable travel, hence the expected strong demand for direct services to Frankfurt and Geneva which are key financial hubs."
Cazenave emphasized the complexities involved in launching new international train routes, saying, "It requires time, investments, expertise, a huge amount of energy, and partnerships, but I am confident the new direct services will happen."
