Germany updates: Bavaria stands defiant in summer break row DW 07/16/2025
Briefly

There is growing pressure in Germany to revise the summer holiday timetable, seen as favoring Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The two southern states always start their school break last, avoiding peak travel chaos experienced by other states. Critics argue that this system leads to unfair advantages for families in the south, who can escape crowded streets and higher prices during peak vacation periods. The debate centers on the need for flexibility and equity in the holiday schedules across all states.
This rigid system is no longer fair, said the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia's Education Minister Dorothee Feller. Summer holidays are not a privilege for a few states. We need constructive solutions, including from those that have shown little flexibility so far. I've heard from many parents in other states that the rigid summer holiday timetable creates unfair advantages for families in Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg.
Germany's holiday calendar is based on the 1964 Hamburg Agreement, which fixes the total number of school holiday days at 75 per year and sets a framework for when the summer break can start depending on Easter and Pentecost dates.
