In Germany, education trade unions are advocating for nationwide heat protection regulations in schools amid an upcoming heat wave with temperatures expected to hit 40 degrees Celsius. Anja Bensinger-Stolze emphasized the need for uniform health and safety regulations for students and staff, alongside modern school infrastructure like green roofs. A nationwide supply of free drinking water and heat safety training are also recommended. Gerhard Brand proposed utilizing outdoor spaces for learning during hot periods, stressing that school authorities must ensure learning remains effective even under extreme temperatures.
"There must be uniform occupational health and safety regulations for students and school employees," said Anja Bensinger-Stolze. "In addition to modernizing schools with green roofs and shade sails, a nationwide supply of free drinking water is necessary for all children, young people, and employees."
Gerhard Brand suggested that spaces outside the school should be used more often during hot times of the year "if it fits with the curriculum." He believes that school authorities have a duty to equip existing school buildings so "learning can be guaranteed even during high outside temperatures."
