Mediterranean crossing: At least 3 die, including 2 children DW 05/11/2025
Briefly

An adult and two children died during a Mediterranean crossing from Libya to Italy due to an engine failure on a frail boat. The incident occurred when the boat, which had set off from Libya, was found adrift south of Lampedusa. The German aid organization RESQSHIP reported rescuing 59 survivors but sadly noted that the two children, aged 3 and 4, were likely victims of dehydration. The incident highlights the increasing dangers in such crossings, with nearly 25,000 migrants reported dead or missing since 2014.
By the time [we] reached the rubber boat at around 4.30 p.m. (1430 GMT/UTC), it was too late to help some of the people.
Two bodies of infants aged 3 and 4 were handed over to us; they had died the day before, probably of thirst.
