"When Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and their two cabinets meet in Berlin for intergovernmental consultations on Monday, the intention is that talks will focus above all on present-day problems and future solutions, especially in relation to Russia's war in Ukraine, NATO's eastern flank, migration, security and infrastructure. But the heavy burden of the past will be the ever-present elephant in the room."
"In his address to mark the 86th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II on September 1, Nawrocki renewed his country's demands for war reparations from its western neighbor. He also said that the future of the partnership between Poland and Germany depended on a solution to this question. President Nawrocki repeated these demands during his inaugural visit to Berlin just over two weeks later."
Poland and Germany will hold intergovernmental consultations focusing on current challenges including Russia's war in Ukraine, NATO's eastern flank, migration, security and infrastructure. Historical grievances over Nazi-era damage remain a central obstacle because Poland's Law and Justice party placed reparations at the core of its Germany policy, and in 2022 demanded 6.2 trillion Zloty. Karol Nawrocki, Poland's president, renewed reparations claims during World War II anniversary remarks and during his Berlin visit, and tied bilateral partnership to a solution. The center-left Polish government agrees reparations are legally closed, but both capitals recognize that a humanitarian gesture to survivors is politically necessary.
