The city of Istres aims to develop an advanced networking infrastructure to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for reducing carbon emissions and optimizing public resources. Partnering with technology firms Ericsson, Spie, and Unitel, Istres plans to deploy a private 5G network, marking a significant step in European urban innovation. This initiative aligns with Istres’ goals of creating a responsive, sustainable city and setting a precedent as one of the first mid-sized European cities to harness private 5G capabilities for enhanced public safety and operational efficiency.
"This private 5G initiative is central to Istres' strategy for resilience, sovereignty and innovation," said François Bernardini, Mayor of Istres. "Above all, it lays the foundation for enhanced urban services."
Ericsson notes that private 5G networks are increasingly vital for cities aiming to enhance security and operational efficiency through mobile video surveillance and real-time data access.
