Virt8ra, a European initiative, enhances its federated cloud infrastructure by adding six new providers, promoting local sourcing and data localization to rival US tech giants. The project, initiated in January 2025, focuses on flexibility, vendor independence, and the use of OpenNebula technology. With participation from various EU member states, the expanded network aims to support an autonomous digital future for Europe. Industry leaders emphasize the necessity of both infrastructure and software to compete effectively with established US cloud services, underscoring the importance of incentives for EU companies to transition to local providers.
Launched in January 2025 by a consortium of eight European tech organizations coordinated by OpenNebula Systems, Virt8ra aims to establish a sovereign and interoperable cloud ecosystem across the European Union.
By championing open source and empowering local providers across the EU, Virt8ra is not only helping to reduce our continent's reliance on hyperscalers and Big Tech vendors, but also laying foundations for a truly autonomous and innovative digital future.
