9 Best Aviators for Men in 2025Esquire's Style Recommendations
Briefly

Acetate aviator frames like Persol present a bold, vintage Italian aesthetic with large, not-quite-teardrop lenses and distinctive metal detailing that enhances presence. Persol revived the Senna Series inspired by Ayrton Senna, though original Senna pairs remain highly coveted. Metal-frame aviators such as American Optical offer a simpler shape, less pronounced teardrop, and deep historical roots in U.S. eyewear heritage. American Optical continues production with revived classic models, including Pilot shapes tied to Apollo 11 and cinematic icons. Frame material choices influence overall vibe: acetate makes a stronger fashion statement, while wire frames read more understated and historically American.
I've been told I have the minority opinion on this, but I much prefer an acetate aviator to a wire frame one. For me, the wire frame is cool and Americana, but it feels a little too Tom Cruise or Joe Biden. Both guys pull off the look, but I don't love it on most. To be fair, people say the same thing (it's too much of a look)about acetate frame aviators.
If you want wire frames, no shame. I would just skip the true teardrop shape, unless that's what you really, really want. I like American Optical as far as brands for these go. It still makes sunglasses in the U.S.A. and it's got plenty of historical appeal. JFK was an AO guy, preferring the preppy Saratoga frames. The Original Pilot shape was worn on the moon by the Apollo 11 guys and by De Niro as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver.
