Louis Vuitton began in 1854 with a founder who packed trunks and built a major luxury house through expert bag packing. Packing was a valuable skill in an era when women's fashion featured large crinoline skirts supported by whalebone and watch-springs. Vuitton served elite clients such as Empress Eugenie of France and expanded from packing to making bespoke bags. The brand's core remains functional travel bags designed to carry substantial loads and endure travel. The modern Express line by Nicolas Ghesquiére evokes historical forms, referencing the Speedy name from 1930 and shapes similar to the Keepall, also designed that year. The Express bag is offered in PM, MM and GM sizes.
Louis Vuitton - the man, way back when in 1854 - kick-started his career and founded probably the largest luxury brand in the world via his propensity for packing bags. Back then, that was a highly skilled task, one best left to professionals in a century when women's clothes were cantilevered on crinoline skirts of whalebone and watch-spring to gargantuan proportions.
Vuitton packed trunks for the highest level of society - the Empress Eugenie of France was his star client, and he began to make the bags for her too. Vuitton have continued doing so ever since. Which is to say that the base of Vuitton is bags that carry a lot of stuff, and that travel well - this is the idea behind the new Express by the modern-day Monsieur Vuitton, women's artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière.
