Kim Kardashian May Believe She Invented the Merkin
""That was just a fun idea that I had," Kardashian told . "There was a shoot, and someone wanted to, like, have hair down there once. And I was like, 'Couldn't this just be easy and have it on a thong?' And so we made that happen.""
""I had no idea that it would get that reaction and sell out in a few minutes," she added to Variety."
Skims released a faux-hair micro string thong marketed as a merkin, and the item sold out within minutes. The concept arose from a photoshoot where someone wanted hair in the pubic area, inspiring a thong with attached hair. Merkins originated around 1450 to conceal pubic hair after shaving to remove lice, and continued in use by prostitutes through the 17th century. John Galliano created merkins for the 2024 Maison Margiela couture show. At the Academy Museum Gala, the merkin's inventor wore Margiela with a full face covering. The quick sellout demonstrates commercial appetite for provocative, historically rooted fashion.
