'Anniversary' Filmmaker Jan Komasa Conceived of 'Dystopian' Film Six Years Ago - Now, It Feels All Too Real
"Six years ago, Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa had an idea for a film. It was multi-layered, rife with compelling themes, packed with juicy roles for a sprawling family unit, and just plain scary. It was also, by his own telling, not just dystopian, it was also so made-up that it felt like "sci-fi." Well, about all that... The film is called "Anniversary," and what felt like a reach six years ago now feels all too real."
"The film, as its title indicates, is set over the course of five years, picking up at different key intervals (starting, of course, with an anniversary party for Diane Lane's Ellen and Kyle Chandler's Paul) in the life of the Taylor family. Ellen and Paul have four kids, who are all quite different, from Zoey Deutch's strait-laced lawyer Cynthia to her more flighty sisters Anna (Madeline Brewer) and Birdie (Mckenna Grace)."
Anniversary follows the Taylor family across five years, beginning at Ellen and Paul’s anniversary party. Ellen is a prominent political science professor; their four children range from disciplined Cynthia to flighty Anna and Birdie, and outsider son Josh. Josh’s girlfriend Liz, a former student of Ellen, conceives a new political ideology called The Change. Liz’s movement gains momentum and reshapes both the family and the nation. As The Change radicalizes society, democratic norms erode and fascism emerges. The family fractures irreparably, and attempts at reconciliation collapse amid political transformation and personal betrayals.
