"According to Bild, Weimer and Tuttle agree that she could not remain at the helm of the renowned film festival, following the political backlash generated by speeches at the awards ceremony on February 22. Bild also mentions a picture that allegedly compromises Tuttle's credibility in the eyes of the German government."
"The tabloid paper describes a February 15 press photo of festival director posing with the crew of the film "Chronicles From the Siege," directed by Palestinian-Syrian filmmaker Abdallah Alkhatib, as a "scandal" and a "demonstrative propaganda photo." While different members of the film team are wearing a keffiyeh and one person is holding a Palestinian flag, the festival director is not exhibiting any symbols."
"The Berlinale has been dealing with criticism and accusations of antisemitism since its 2024 edition. This year's Berlinale prize winners, and their acceptance speeches, embodied the difficult tightrope along which the festival has to walk."
German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer plans to dismiss Tricia Tuttle, director of the Berlin International Film Festival, according to reports from German daily Bild. The dismissal follows political controversy generated by speeches at the February 22 awards ceremony and a photograph from February 15 showing Tuttle with the crew of Palestinian-Syrian filmmaker Abdallah Alkhatib's film "Chronicles From the Siege." While crew members wore keffiyehs and displayed a Palestinian flag, Tuttle displayed no such symbols. An extraordinary meeting of the KBB, the organization managing the Berlinale, was called for Thursday. This was Tuttle's second year leading the festival, which has faced ongoing criticism and antisemitism accusations since its 2024 edition.
