Is This Thing On? is an upcoming film directed and co-written by Bradley Cooper that stars Will Arnett as Alex, a middle-aged man who turns to stand-up comedy to process his divorce. Arnett conceived the idea after hearing British comedian John Bishop's real-life divorce story and brought the premise to Cooper, who joined during other productions. Searchlight Pictures released first images showing arguing scenes between the couple, Arnett performing onstage, and behind-the-scenes shots including Cooper operating a camera. The film features Laura Dern and will premiere at NYFF63 with a limited theatrical release on December 19. Cooper describes the film as 'midlife catharsis.'
Will Arnett stars as a middle-aged man who starts performing standup comedy to process his divorce. Arnett came up with the idea after meeting British comedian John Bishop at a party and hearing his real-life divorce story, per Vanity Fair. He then took the idea to his longtime friend Cooper (they met through Cooper's Wet Hot American Summer co-star and Arnett's ex-wife Amy Poehler), while he was in production on , and Cooper agreed to co-write and direct the film.
Searchlight Pictures released the film's first images on August 21. The film follows a couple from the beginning of their divorce as Alex (Arnett) turns to stand-up comedy to release his pent-up feelings. In the photo release, there are multiple shots of the primary couple arguing, a picture of Arnett onstage, and one photo in which you can see behind the scenes, with director Cooper in the shot as well, operating a camera.
