Margot Robbie is both star and producer on the project. Jacob Elordi was cast as Heathcliff and received strong public endorsement from Robbie, who compared him to a leading contemporary actor and urged audience trust in his performance. The casting prompted debate because some readers interpret Heathcliff as a person of color based on Emily Brontë's description as a 'dark-skinned gypsy.' Robbie referenced the long lineage of actors who have previously portrayed Heathcliff.
