Harry Potter Looms Large for Ronan Day-Lewis
"I watched Whale Rider when I was around 5, and that made a big impression on me. I became obsessed with it for a while. There was a mythic aspect to it, and I was fascinated by the ocean. I had watched a lot of Blue Planet. And the performance by the main actress [Keisha Castle-Hughes] is amazing. There's a sense of mystery throughout. And then, of course, My Neighbor Totoro was another big one."
"My parents made this film, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, which they shot on Prince Edward Island off the coast of Canada. I think I was about 5 at the time. I remember seeing that they made this set that was a house built into a hill with the grass growing over the roof. It was like a crazy mirage."
Anemone is Ronan Day-Lewis's debut film, a dark, emotional exploration of generational trauma. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis, marking his return to film after an eight-year hiatus. Ronan grew up around film sets, visiting Prince Edward Island during his parents' production of The Ballad of Jack and Rose at about age five, and that experience left a vivid impression. Early cinematic influences include Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Whale Rider, My Neighbor Totoro, and Paul Thomas Anderson's work. Ronan purchased early Harry Potter films, admired Daniel Radcliffe, was deeply affected by Ken Loach's Kes, and read a DIY filmmaking book in his youth.
