"Namely, they installed old-school payphones around the city and have been giving numbers via the film's socials to call on them as part of a few scavenger hunts. On Thursday, people were sent to the pay phone on Houston amd E. 2nd, and after punching in the code #IDLES (#43537), they were led to A1 Records, where they were given a ticket to see The Idles at The Pyramid Club that night."
"The Pyramid Club no longer exists, but the space at 101 Ave A is now Night Club 101, and The Idles turned out to be IDLES, who did the soundtrack for Caught Stealing. Keeping with the 1998 theme of film, they put up a reproduction of The Pyramid Club's sign outside the club and printed up old-school flyers for the show."
Caught Stealing is set in NYC's East Village and Lower East Side in the late 1990s and used viral promotions involving old-school payphones and scavenger-hunt phone numbers. Dialing assigned numbers directed participants to locations like A1 Records and to a surprise IDLES show at the Pyramid Club site now operating as Night Club 101. IDLES, who recorded the film's soundtrack, performed in a roughly 150-person main room with reproduction Pyramid Club signage, printed flyers, and "Caught Stealing" stickers on phone cameras. Frontman Joe Talbot knocked loose soundproofing tiles, requested A/C changes, and the hour-long condensed set packed greatest hits and high-energy crowd-participation moments into a very sweaty, swarming pit.
