Knightley reported being unaware of calls to boycott JK Rowling prior to joining the audiobook cast, expressed regret, and urged finding respect and ways to live together despite differing opinions. Calls to boycott intensified after Rowling reacted to a UK Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of woman by posting a photograph of herself smoking a cigar. Rowling opposed removing actor Paapa Essiedu after he signed an open letter and criticized Emma Watson as "the actor is ignorant of how ignorant she is."
