Miriam Margolyes opens up about rarely-seen partner of almost 60 years
Briefly

Miriam Margolyes met Australian professor Heather in 1968 while working on a BBC radio drama. The couple entered a civil partnership later in life primarily for practical reasons such as next-of-kin status. They describe a deep, long-lasting bond: Margolyes calls Heather her 'person' and praises her as remarkable, brilliant, and uplifting, while acknowledging the relationship includes anger and surprise. The pair have never lived together full-time, with Margolyes based in London and Heather in Amsterdam, but they frequently holiday together in Tuscany and New South Wales. They bought an Italian farmhouse in 1973 and hope to live there together permanently.
The disarmingly candid, potty-mouthed actress and author met Australian professor Heather back in 1968, while Margolyes was working on a BBC radio drama. In their later years, the couple entered a civil partnership, which Margolyes once said was "nothing about romance" and rather for more practical reasons, such as being the next of kin if one of them were to fall ill.
"I hope I will be able to live with Heather in the house that we bought together in Italy in 1973 until we die," she explained. More than fifty years ago, the couple purchased an old farm house in Italy, and have planned to live there together for some years. In 2023, Miriam Margolyes told Graham Norton on The Graham Norton Show - her favourite chat show to appear on - that it was "silly" for the couple to live separately.
