Motion Picture Association Demands Meta Stops Using PG-13 Rating For Teen Accounts
"In a letter sent to Meta chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead on Oct. 28, the MPA argues that Meta's use of the PG-13 movie rating is "literally false and highly misleading," constituting false advertising and a dilution of the MPA trademark. "The MPA has worked for decades to earn the public's trust in its rating system. Any dissatisfaction with Meta's automated classification will inevitably cause the public to question the integrity of the MPA's rating system," the letter contends."
"On Oct. 14, Meta announced an overhaul of its parental control and content moderation settings for young users, known as Teen Accounts. In addition to new oversight tools and AI guidelines, the new features included age-appropriate filters that Meta argued reflected the same level of content exposure as MPA ratings, such as brief nudity and minor violence, expletives, and drug or alcohol use."
The MPA sent Meta a cease-and-desist on Oct. 28 demanding that Meta stop using the MPA's PG-13 designation in Meta's new teen safety features, asserting that such use is literally false, highly misleading, constitutes false advertising, and dilutes the MPA trademark. The MPA said it was not contacted prior to Meta's announcement and noted previous denials to competitors seeking to use the ratings. Meta announced on Oct. 14 an overhaul of Teen Accounts including age-appropriate filters that it said mirrored MPA ratings for brief nudity, minor violence, expletives, and drug or alcohol use. The feature rollout followed investigations and a report finding prior safety tools had failed stress testing.
