""The MPA has worked for decades to earn the public's trust in its rating system.""
""Any dissatisfaction with Meta's automated classification will inevitably cause the public to question the integrity of the MPA's rating system.""
The Motion Picture Association sent Meta a cease-and-desist letter demanding Meta stop using the term "PG-13" after Meta announced teens on Instagram would, by default, see content adhering to PG-13 movie ratings. The MPA said Meta's claim is literally false and highly misleading and argued that its movie-rating system cannot be compared to Meta's content restrictions, which appear to rely heavily on artificial intelligence. The MPA warned that dissatisfaction with automated classification could undermine public trust in its rating system. Meta replied that it never claimed MPA certification, described its restrictions as "guided" by PG-13, and asserted that its use of the term qualifies as fair use.
