"This film shows the reality of Israeli occupation and oppression against Palestinians - but that truth apparently didn't fit the narrative that big U.S. streamers wanted to promote. We talked to MUBI for months, and initially thought our film had found its home, but in the end we learned that they were accepting a huge investment from Sequoia Capital."
"It made no sense to us that they would take our film showing Israel's oppression of Palestinians, and then also partner with a company contributing to that oppression."
"The beliefs of individual investors do not reflect the views of MUBI. We take the feedback from our community very seriously, and are steadfast in remaining an independent founder-led company."
No Other Land will be released on U.S. streaming platforms Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, and YouTube on October 20. The filmmakers rejected a Mubi distribution deal after learning Mubi accepted a $100 million investment from Sequoia Capital, an investor linked to Israeli military-tech development. The directors said partnering with a company tied to Israeli military tech conflicted with their goal of directing proceeds to Palestinians in Masafer Yatta. The team chose self-release to control revenue distribution. The Mubi-Sequoia connection drew criticism from other filmmakers, and Mubi responded by emphasizing investor beliefs do not reflect the company.
