"I like shame as a theme and how we can be highly functioning and full of shame,"
"How we basically are highly functioning and full of shame..."
"Yeah. And so is Lucas. It's the best way to be. Vers is the best."
"I wanted Andrew to be someone that when Lucas walks away from it, he can be like, 'I practised safe sex. He was very clear with me. He said, "This is the situation..." from the start'."
Plainclothes centers on New York cruising culture in 1997 and follows closeted cop Lucas, who lures and entraps men until he meets Andrew and forms a romantic connection. Tom Blyth plays Lucas and Russell Tovey plays Andrew/Adam. Tovey describes shame as an inherent, embedded trait that coexists with high functioning behavior and says Adam is filled with shame yet knows how to survive. Lucas upends Adam's established life literally, metaphorically, and physically. Both characters are described as vers, and Tovey insisted on visible condoms and a positive safe-sex portrayal for Andrew's role.
