Briefly

In a recent interview for the 20th anniversary of 'Pride & Prejudice,' director Joe Wright discussed an improvised scene where Mr. Darcy's hand trembles after assisting Elizabeth Bennet. Wright highlighted this moment as significant, illustrating the magnetic attraction between the characters despite their conscious struggles. Although he initially felt the scene fell flat during filming, its lasting impact and resonance with audiences showcases how storytelling transcends the script. The hand tremble has since gained popularity on platforms like TikTok, reflecting on the emotional depth of their relationship.
“It wasn't in the script, but that was an important moment in the book,” Wright explained about the improvised hand tremble by Macfadyen. “This sudden realization, as they were parting, of what they meant to each other...”
Wright stated, “Our bodies are so much smarter than our minds often. Although their conscious minds are fighting against each other, their bodies are two magnets drawn to each other.”
Wright reflected on the shooting day, sharing, ‘I thought, 'Oh no, we didn't get it. It was rubbish. It didn't work.' Now, people are still posting it. It's odd and really nice.’
