Popular NYC ice cream shop to open second Chicago location, bring back iconic limited-time flavor
Van Leeuwen will open a second Chicago location on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Catalog at Willis Tower, arriving weeks after its Wicker Park debut. The Wicker Park opening featured a limited-time Jeppson's Malört ice cream that sold out in under 48 hours, leading to the flavor's return for the new grand opening. Malört is a wormwood-based digestif known locally as "the taste you love to hate" and has been seen as a rite of passage or a hangover cure. The Willis Tower shop will offer more than 30 flavors, free tote bags for the first 100 customers, and $1 scoops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The brand is known for creative seasonal collaborations with mainstream brands and celebrities.
"The scoop shop will open its second location on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Catalog at Willis Tower. Last month, Van Leeuwen hosted a grand opening celebration for its Wicker Park location, and to mark the occasion, the brand unveiled limited-time Jeppson's Malört ice-cream. In an Instagram post announcing the collaboration, Van Leeuwen said the flavor wouldn't be available forever. But some might be pleased to learn it will be making a return for the new location's grand opening."
""Our first collaboration with Van Leeuwen was a huge hit - Chicagoans didn't leave a scoop behind, selling out the Malört ice cream in under 48 hours," Tremaine Atkinson, CEO of CH Distillery, owner and producer of Malört, said in a news release. "Partnering again was a no-brainer. This city shows up for bold flavor, and no one embraces the bitter better than Chicago."'"
