The World's Most Heavily-Peated Whisky Returns With a Winner
"the best time of year for Scotch drinkers,"
"It's very young, it's very strong and it's very peaty. It shouldn't work. It really challenges your perception of whisky."
"The numbers would leave us to believe that this is all about smoke, but actually you'll notice Octomore 16.1 can be gentle, sweet and elegant,"
"That high strength isn't aggressive."
Bruichladdich is an Islay distillery producing multiple brands including Octomore, a yearly release billed as the world's most heavily-peated Scotch series. Octomore releases are treated as fresh experiments each year with varying phenol parts per million (PPM), diverse cask maturations and different barley sources. Octomore commonly measures far above typical peat levels (minimum 80 PPM). Despite young age and high strength, the liquids often present as soft, sweet and elegant rather than aggressively smoky. The Octomore 16 expressions were aged five years, non-chill-filtered, and proofed with water from Octomore Spring in Islay.
