Tamara Adams left an abusive marriage eighteen years ago and relied on culinary skills developed since age 17 to support four children. She launched Honey & Pearl as a pop-up in 2016 and expanded after meeting Vinnie Esparza, who encouraged her to pursue the business full time. The couple built a following with regular pop-ups from 2018 and signature items like Tamara’s guava chiffon cake, filling a local void left by closed bakeries. Baking provided financial independence and emotional survival for Tamara and became the foundation for a successful Emeryville bakery run by the couple.
"I kept telling myself, 'One day, I'm going to try these,'"
"One of the things while I was in that marriage that essentially kept me alive was this hope of when you get out of here, you're going to start a business,"
"Once I tried her stuff and realized how talented she is, I made it a goal at that point that we had to make this happen,"
