The Paris Catacombs will close for six months for renovations costing 5.5 million euros to modernize ventilation, lighting and the visitor route. The underground ossuary holds millions of bodies transferred from cemeteries between the Middle Ages and the French Revolution. Moisture buildup creates puddles and fosters bacterial growth that threatens bone preservation. The works aim to reduce humidity, restructure the near-800-metre visitor path and preserve the site's authentic atmosphere. Graffiti will be cleaned in spots while some 19th-century inscriptions may be retained. Previously stolen bones are now cemented together and staff urge respectful visitor behavior.
