A tragic boat fire in Equateur province, Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in a confirmed death toll of 33, significantly lower than earlier estimates of 148. The incident occurred at the confluence of the Congo and Ruki rivers, where the overcrowded vessel was transporting around 400 people. The mayor of Mbandaka noted that 'confusion' contributed to the discrepancies in reporting the death toll. Cooking aboard the vessel is suspected to have ignited the fire, and boat travel remains common due to poor infrastructure.
