"Airbus instructed its clients Friday to take "immediate precautionary action" after evaluating a technical malfunction on board a JetBlue flight in October. "Intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls," it said, adding that "a significant number of A320 Family aircraft currently in-service" may be affected. Replacing the software will take "a few hours" on most planes but for some 1,000 aircraft, the process "will take weeks", a source close to the issue told AFP."
"Air France told AFP it was calculating how many more flights would be cancelled Saturday. BBC reporting suggests that up to 50 flights to and from Charles de Gaulle Airport, its Paris base, have been cancelled on Saturday morning. As of 08:30am, online departure information for the Paris airport shows several cancellations on Air France services, mostly on domestic flights, though some of the flagship carrier's scheduled departures are going ahead."
Airbus alerted operators that up to 6,000 A320-family aircraft may require a software upgrade after a technical malfunction on a JetBlue flight linked to intense solar radiation corrupting flight-control data. Operators were instructed to apply immediate precautionary action. Software replacement will take a few hours on most aircraft, while about 1,000 planes may need weeks. Airlines reported flight cancellations and delays, with Air France cancelling dozens and up to 50 departures at Charles de Gaulle, Avianca saying 70% of its fleet was impacted, and easyJet completing many updates and expecting limited disruption. Regulatory bodies issued related statements.
