"returned safely, went through registration and was returned to his cell"
"He respected the time limit of his leave permit"
"He is not being monitored, he is not being escorted. Someone from his entourage came to pick him up,"
A prisoner convicted of drug trafficking held in a French high-security jail was granted a day release to meet a potential employer. Several vehicles left the Vendin-le-Vieil supermax early in the morning as the inmate travelled, reportedly unescorted, with plans to take a train to Lyon. The justice ministry said the inmate returned safely, was registered and returned to his cell, and respected the leave permit time limit. The inmate, identified as Ouaihid Ben Faiza, is a key figure in a major Parisian suburbs trafficking network, due for release in 2029 and previously escaped custody in 2014. The leave was granted against the public prosecutor's advice and provoked outrage from unions and public figures following recent drug-related violence.
