U.S. ambassador Jared Kushner sent an open letter accusing French government statements about recognizing Palestine of contributing to a dramatic rise in antisemitism and insufficient action to confront it. The letter followed a similar message from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and alleged that public statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward Palestinian recognition embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger Jewish life. France rejected the accusations, affirmed that authorities are mobilized to fight antisemitism, called the allegations unacceptable and interfering in internal affairs, and noted several countries subsequently announced intentions to recognize a Palestinian state.
"I write out of deep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France and the lack of sufficient action by your government to confront it..."
"Public statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger Jewish life in France. In today's world, anti-Zionism is antisemitism - plain and simple," he wrote.
"The Ambassador's allegations are unacceptable. They run counter to international law, in particular the obligation not to interfere in the internal affairs of States," it added.
