President Emmanuel Macron will preside over a solemn ceremony at 6.30 pm, and the Élysée Palace will broadcast the event on its website. The ceremony is expected to include readings from Badinter's speeches, notably his 1981 denunciation of the death penalty. Badinter was born to a Jewish family from Bessarabia, survived occupied France while his father was deported to Sobibor, and earned law and master's degrees with a focus on ethical issues.
