Frenchwoman fined 1,250 for cat visiting the neighbour's garden
"Theres no proof it was Re9mi," she told French daily Le Parisien. "There are other orange cats in the neighbourhood, and the photos the neighbour showed in court also clearly show that several other felines pass through his garden."
""Hes gained weight, hes become aggressive... Its as if hes been sentenced to house arrest, a real double punishment," she told Le Parisien."
""We are not aware of a similar precedent, and if this decision were to set a legal precedent"
Dominique Valdès of Adge, Hérault, was ordered by a Béziers court to pay her neighbour €1,250 plus legal fees after her orange tomcat Rémi allegedly entered his property multiple times, urinated on a duvet, defecated in the garden and left paw prints on drying plaster. The court also set a €30 penalty for each subsequent intrusion. Dominique denies that Rémi caused the damage, citing other orange cats and photos showing multiple felines. Since January 2025 she has kept Rémi indoors, saying he has gained weight and become aggressive. The neighbour has filed a new case for December 2025 seeking further damages and higher repeat-offence penalties. The SPA said the case might be unprecedented in French areas where cats commonly roam outdoors.
