Macron announces new French aircraft carrier
"In line with the last two military programming laws, and after a thorough and comprehensive review, I have decided to equip France with a new aircraft carrier,"
"In an age of predators, we must be strong in order to be feared,"
France has given official approval to replace its flagship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which entered service in 2001 after more than a decade of construction. Preliminary studies began in 2018 with work starting in 2020. The authorization enables signing all contracts for the program despite a domestic budgetary deadlock and criticism over national priorities given security concerns in Europe. The new nuclear-powered carrier will displace nearly 80,000 tons, be about 310 metres long, carry 30 fighter jets with a crew of 2,000, and remain smaller than U.S. supercarriers but larger than most other carriers.
