More French towns hike taxe d'habitation bills on second homes
"Almost half of the 3,690 town and village councils in France that have the authority to raise the rate of taxe d'habitation bills on second homes have done so, according to official figures. Taxe d'habitation bills will start dropping into the letter boxes of second home owners in the next few days - and some may well be in for an unpleasant surprise."
"Some 40 percent of the 1,628 councils increasing their surcharge in 2025 have decided to apply the full 60 percent rate to their bills, up from 37 percent in 2024, when 539 out of 1,461 eligible municipalities chose to do so, Franceinfo reports. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has the highest number of municipalities applying the increase in charges, with 339, according to the DGFiP, followed by Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (327), Occitanie (185), Nouvelle-Aquitaine (157), and Île-de-France (152)."
A total of 1,628 of the 3,690 eligible town and village councils (44.1 percent) elected to increase their portion of the taxe d'habitation on second homes for 2025, up from 1,461 (39.5 percent) the previous year. Local councils in pressured housing zones (zones tendues) can add a surcharge between 5 percent and 60 percent. Forty percent of the councils raising charges opted for the maximum 60 percent rate, an increase from 37 percent in 2024 when 539 municipalities applied the full surcharge. The largest numbers of municipalities applying increases are in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Occitanie, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and Île-de-France.
