Struggling French supermarket giant Auchan to 'franchise' 300 stores
"The business assets and real estate will remain the property of Auchan, the employees will remain Auchan employees, but will work under the Intermarché brand, which will supply goods, commercial policy, and store concept, and which will supply the stores,"
" It's a win-win situation,"
"Auchan will benefit from our expertise, and will enable us to extend our hold on the French market."
"subject to prior approval by the relevant competition authorities"
Auchan plans to operate all 300 of its supermarkets as franchises under the Intermarché and Netto banners, while larger hypermarkets and Corsica stores will retain the Auchan name. Auchan Retail will create a dedicated legal entity to operate the rebranded stores under a franchise agreement with Intermarché. Business assets and real estate will remain Auchan property; employees will remain Auchan employees but will work under the Intermarché brand, which will supply goods, commercial policy and store concept. The project is subject to competition authority approval and could take effect at the end of 2026. The move builds on a broader partnership including a 10-year purchasing alliance.
