The Louvre is home to the famous Mona Lisa painting and the Louvre Director, Laurence des Cars will be questioned later today by the cultural committee at the French Senate over security at the museum. Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said on Tuesday, "The Louvre curator estimated the damages to be €88 million.""
"Beccuau added that should the thieves have the "very bad idea of melting down these jewels" then they will not gain the real value of the stolen items. French authorities have started a manhunt for the thieves and investigators believe it may have been an "organised crime group." France24 reported that as the thieves fled the Louvre they dropped a crown which is diamond studded."
The Louvre reopened after a heist in which €88 million of jewellery was reported stolen. The museum, home to the Mona Lisa, will have its director, Laurence des Cars, questioned by the French Senate cultural committee about security. Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau cited the curator’s estimate of €88 million in damages and warned that melting the jewels would not yield their true value. Reporters noted that fleeing thieves dropped a diamond-studded crown, and an emerald-and-diamond necklace once owned by Empress Eugenie was among the stolen items.
