France to review extremist groups after far-right activist killed
"There is no place for militias wherever they come from. Macron said that Tuesday's meeting aimed to take full stock of the violent action groups that are rampant and have links with political parties of any kind."
"Since Quentin Deranque's death, the French President has been at pains to denounce political violence, whether it comes from extreme left-wing movements or extreme right-wing movements, calling on all extremes to clean up their ranks."
"After the meeting, the Interior Minister said that ban proceedings would begin against five local offshoots of La Jeune Garde, which was dissolved in June 2025 but which had been suspected of re-forming."
Ten days after far-right activist Quentin Deranque was beaten to death in Lyon, President Emmanuel Macron convened a meeting with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, and intelligence officials to address violent action groups linked to political parties. Seven people were charged in Deranque's death, most with connections to far-left groups including La Jeune Garde Antifasciste. Macron emphasized that no place exists for militias from any political extreme and called for all extremes to clean their ranks. The Interior Ministry announced ban proceedings against five local offshoots of La Jeune Garde, which was dissolved in June 2025 but suspected of reforming. Additionally, proceedings against three ultra-right and one ultra-left structure were already underway, expected to conclude within two months.
