French doctors initiated an unlimited strike in response to proposed legislation regulating the establishment of General Practitioner (GP) practices in France. The law, aimed at addressing doctor shortages in rural areas, requires GPs to seek permission to set up practices in regions without a doctor deficit, while areas in need remain unregulated. The strike, backed by both GPs and hospital doctors, also criticizes additional proposals mandating doctors to work in underserved areas. Leaders argue these measures contribute to physician burnout and misunderstand the healthcare access issue.
"We're ready to take on the fight, and the only way to do that is to block the system," Anna Boctor, president of the Jeunes Médecins union, told France Info.
"Coercion and a knife to the throat are not a solution, but contribute to the burn-out and malaise of the medical population," added Anna Boctor.
"Promoting access to healthcare by opposing the primary players in the field, namely doctors, makes no sense."
The PM said that he was not in favour of the authorisation plan, but instead proposed requiring all doctors to work for at least two days a month in areas classed as 'medical deserts.'
