French MPs back Macron associate to run Bank of France

French lawmakers approved Emmanuel Moulin, Macron’s former chief of staff, to govern the central bank. Emmanuel Moulin secured enough votes to take the role after parliamentary finance committees in both chambers did not oppose the appointment. Critics of President Emmanuel Macron said the centrist president is placing allies in top positions to protect key government institutions from the far right before his term ends next year. A majority of lawmakers in both the National Assembly and the Senate voted against Moulin. Under the voting rules, blocking the appointment required three-fifths of votes cast to be against it, which did not occur. Marine Le Pen’s far-right, anti-immigration party is preparing for what it views as its best chance to win the 2027 presidential election.
